- Beginning in March 2018 I had the opportunity to complete my PJ surgical rotation at BGU Murnau. I was actually quite excited because #1 I really wanted to an orthopedic/trauma surgeon and #2 I had done a 4 week rotation 2 years prior, and it was fantastic.
Now I am not sure exactly what happened at the clinic between 2016 and 2018, but my rotation was more or less for the dogs.
I started out in septic surgery, which I thought was quite interesting. More or less you stand in the operating theater and hold instruments or a leg. Even when I tried to ask questions, because as I said before- I really wanted to be a surgeon, they were either ignored or I received a snappy comeback. The residents were okay, but most of them are so unbelievably arrogant it is hard to imagine that these people even fit into society. I basically learned nothing in the first 4 weeks. The "Chefarzt" was pretty great when you had the chance to be in theater with him-that is where most of the learning took place.
I then rotated to the emergency department-loved it. Great teaching and you can pretty much work and learn at your pace down there. Is a must! It is also very loved from all the students-sign up on your first day.
The pediatric surgery rotation follwed. Great attendings. Learned a lot. Was in way over my head. They have a lot of rare diseases-super fascinating.
Plastic and Hand- definitely could have done without. Did get to do quite a bit though in theater-definitely much more than the first 4 weeks. Cool team- very laid back. I personally just did not find the work that thrilling, but it was great to experience.
Teaching was hands-down bad. I do not know how else to put it. Unmotivated speakers, repeats of the same presentations and always so late after work.
Most of us drove from Munich- now there we were at fault, but you start quite early mostly before 7am and on the days you have teaching- you are leaving the hospital at 7pm. I would not have minded the long hours if I was learning something but that just was not the case.
The concensus between the 4 of us in my rotation was- Murnau can and must do better.
The certain amount of arrogance you can simply expect with most surgeons- but Murnau takes it to an extreme. The residents seem to operate extremly little- the attendings almost always operate and the residents are "hacken-halter." Maybe it is that way in all surgical hospitals?
I do hope that they will return to the way it was in 2016-now that was fun.
